“Let me suggest three simple and broadly applicable precepts of differentiation:

1) As much as possible, we should do things fascists cannot do.

2) As much as possible, we should not do things fascists want us to do and we should do things fascists don't want us to do.

3) Never accept the fascist offer.

I've reblogged a movable type Douyin originally by the same user, too, so I'm just going to use that post as a template. It looked so familiar that this time, I just went to his Douyin, user 山白 (Douyin username @\shanbai2023), and found it:

2.33 xfO:/ T@Y.mq 10/01 象棋起源于中国,是一种古老的棋类游戏# 新农人计划2024 # 乡村守护人 # 谁不播咱湖南好 https://v.douyin.com/iYPxuD5d/ 复制此链接,打开Dou音搜索,直接观看视频!

The above is the full text that the share button yields that I'm yet again too lazy to clean up. Ignore the last sentence—pasting the URL into the browser works just as well.

My thesis advisor “made” me learn about and how to play Xainqui as part of one of my “readings and conference” classes… that set is so much more gorgeous than mine!

This was one of my introductions to military history. I was 14 and haven't ever really looked back. Big fan of star forts and Vauban.

SandRhoman History has a very good video on the topic too:

I love SandRhoman History! But honestly that list is pretty good… only things I’d add to it are related to reconnaissance and secrecy. And Duffy’s book is foundational to an understanding of Early Modern European warfare…

To be fair, that should on the list of anything military related: reconnaissance and secrecy are at top, if not the top, things.

The Star Fort is a very impressive design that, when constructed properly does a good job of fulfilling its purpose of being an obstacle to stop advancing enemy armies.

But the design DID give rise to some of the most detailed and involved process of siege warfare and it's wonderful to study.

I agree with many of the above. Early Modern European warfare, and history in general is an awesome field to learn about and sadly too often overlooked.

Vauban said, in so many words, that if you followed his system, that he codified in A Manual Of Siegecraft and Fortification, there was NO FORT that would stand barring relief from outside forces… his chapter on defense is essentially “hold out for as long as is practical. Too long, and the attackers tend to ‘overreact’ not long enough and you’ll be accused of cowardice”…
